Lyndhurst, a village in Hampshire some 9 miles north east of Southampton, is the administrative capital of the New Forest. The first recorded meeting of the New Forest Hunt at Lyndhurst was in 1864 when a meeting took place on 21st June. By 1866 the meeting was well established and had the backing of the gentry and noblemen of the region. The meeting on Thursday 28th June 1866 consisted of flat races over a range of distances, the New Forest Plate over 6 furlongs being won by Avonwater owned by Mr Radclyffe. Later in the day the prestigious Lyndhurst Handicap, over 1 ¼ miles, was won by Mr T Bayly’s Old Warden. Racing continued for the next 5 years until a final meeting on Wednesday 28th June 1871. |
